Paul McHugh, M.D.
Following the film, Dr. Paul McHugh, psychiatrist-in-chief at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and director of the
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins University, led a discussion and took questions
from the audience. Dr. McHugh developed an interest in multiple personality disorder (MPD) some six to eight years
ago when he began to witness a huge increase in this diagnosis that is considered by many to be an artifactual
behavior provoked by doctors' interest. Dr. McHugh became interested in the study of so-called "repressed
memories" that have been hypothesized to be the mechanism for MPD. This possiblity was also discussed.
